The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government's One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, launched on January 24, 2018, by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, selects and promotes one unique indigenous product or craft per district across the state's 75 districts to foster local entrepreneurship, skill development, branding, and exports while reviving traditional industries like handicrafts, textiles, and agro-products. Many products receive Geographical Indication (GI) tags for authenticity, such as chikankari embroidery from Lucknow or zari-zardozi from various areas, with support including financial subsidies (up to 25% for projects under Rs. 2.5 million for weaker sections), training, Common Facility Centres (CFCs) for quality control, and marketing via e-portals and global platforms. The initiative has boosted exports by over 30% since inception, reaching around INR 89,000 crore in 2019-20, generated employment for artisans (including over 3.5 lakh jobs linked to related efforts like Khadi promotion), and earned national recognition, inspiring similar programs elsewhere.
